Conditional nonparametric frontier models for convex and non convex technologies: A unifying approach

چکیده
The explanation of productivity differentials is very important to identify the economic conditions that create inefficiency and to improve managerial performance. In literature two main approaches have been developed: one-stage approaches and twostage approaches. Daraio and Simar (2003) propose a full nonparametric methodology based on conditional FDH and conditional order-m frontiers without any convexity assumption on the technology. On the one hand, convexity has always been assumed in mainstream production theory and general equilibrium. On the other hand, in many empirical applications, the convexity assumption can be reasonable and sometimes natural. Leading by these considerations, in this paper we propose a unifying approach to introduce external-environmental variables in nonparametric frontier models for convex and non convex technologies. Developing further the work done in Daraio and Simar (2003) we introduce a conditional DEA estimator, i.e., an estimator of production frontier of DEA type conditioned to some external-environmental variables which are neither inputs nor outputs under the control of the producer. A robust version of this conditional estimator is also proposed. These various measures of efficiency provide also indicators of convexity. Illustrations through simulated and real data (mutual funds) examples are reported. ∗This paper has been prepared within the AQuaMethPSR Project under the PRIME Network of Excellence supported by the European Commission, 6th Framework Programme. Some Conditions for Characterizing Minimum Face in Non-Radial DEA Models with Undesirable Outputs
The problem of utilizing undesirable (bad) outputs in DEA models often need replacing the assumption of free disposability of outputs by weak disposability of outputs. The Kuosmanen technology is the only correct representation of the fully convex technology exhibiting weak disposability of bad and good outputs. Also, there are some specific features of non-radial data envelopment analysis (DEA...
متن کاملA Probabilistic Approach for Assessing the Significance of Contextual Variables in Nonparametric Frontier Models: An Application to Brazilian Banks*
This article presents an empirical banking application illustrating the use of a nonparametric frontier model relying on a probabilistic definition of the production frontier. It investigates the statistical significance of nonperforming loans in productive efficiency for a sample of Brazilian banks using the concepts of conditional and unconditional efficiency measures in a context where it is...
متن کاملThe Tail Mean-Variance Model and Extended Efficient Frontier
In portfolio theory, it is well-known that the distributions of stock returns often have non-Gaussian characteristics. Therefore, we need non-symmetric distributions for modeling and accurate analysis of actuarial data. For this purpose and optimal portfolio selection, we use the Tail Mean-Variance (TMV) model, which focuses on the rare risks but high losses and usually happens in the tail of r...
متن کاملStochastic non-smooth envelopment of data: Semi-parametric frontier estimation subject to shape constraints
The field of productive efficiency analysis is currently divided between two main paradigms: the deterministic, nonparametric Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and the parametric Stochastic Frontier Analysis (SFA). This paper examines an encompassing semiparametric frontier model that combines the DEA-type nonparametric frontier, which satisfies monotonicity and concavity, with the SFA-style stoc...
